Mar Hall's Commitment to Sustainability

Preserving Heritage, Embracing the Future

Mar Hall is dedicated to environmental stewardship, implementing comprehensive initiatives to preserve its historic estate, enhance biodiversity, and promote sustainable practices throughout its operations.

At Mar Hall, we are dedicated to harmonising luxury with environmental stewardship. Our ongoing £15 million renovation is not only revitalising our historic estate but also embedding sustainable practices to ensure a greener future for generations to come.

Landscape Restoration and Biodiversity Enhancement

Under the guidance of our Head Landscaper, Wayne Simon Page, we are rejuvenating our 240-acre estate to celebrate and protect its natural beauty:

Restoration of Original Features: The historic three fountain pools on the south terrace have been meticulously restored, including the addition of a new 4-metre central fountain, bringing elegance and life back to these cherished landmarks.

Themed Gardens: We have introduced a new parterre garden and knot garden on the north terrace, with plans for two maze gardens to be planted in early winter, offering guests serene spaces to explore and reflect.

Formal Rose Garden Expansion: Our formal rose garden now boasts 14 varieties of perpetual flowering roses, with an additional 10 varieties to be planted this winter. Complementing this, 1,000 allium bulbs have been added for a vibrant spring display.

Sunken Seating and Fire-Pit Areas: Newly created sunken seating and fire-pit areas provide inviting spaces for guests to enjoy the outdoors comfortably, regardless of the weather.

Biodiversity Through Planting: We are enhancing biodiversity by introducing new tree and shrub species, while carefully managing existing vegetation to promote a healthy and diverse ecosystem.

Woodland Restoration: Our estate includes 50 acres of ancient woodland and additional forested areas. We are committed to allowing these forests to evolve naturally, supporting wildlife habitats and ecological balance.

Bee Gardens: We have established bee gardens with five hives, which produced approximately 10 pounds of honey in their first year, contributing to local biodiversity and offering guests a taste of Mar Hall's own honey.

Mini-Maple Forest: A newly planted mini-maple forest near the main house entrance enhances the landscape's beauty and ecological diversity.

'In the Rough' Plant Bed: Near the clubhouse, we've created a themed plant bed featuring birch trees, grasses, and box balls, playfully reflecting the concept of golf balls lost in the grass.

Garden Reading Room: An old glass spa building has been repurposed into a garden reading room, providing a tranquil space for guests to relax amidst nature.

Sustainable Spa Practices

Our commitment to sustainability extends to our spa, where we partner with ishga, a skincare brand that utilises organic seaweed from the Hebrides. This collaboration ensures that our treatments are both luxurious and environmentally friendly, providing guests with natural wellness experiences.
Mar Hall is proud to announce a meaningful collaboration with Scotland's Bravest Manufacturing Company for the creation of our new golf course signage. This partnership not only enhances our facilities but also underscores our commitment to community engagement and support.

About Scotland's Bravest Manufacturing Company

Scotland's Bravest Manufacturing Company is a leading social enterprise that provides employment opportunities to military veterans and individuals with disabilities. Located in Bishopton, Renfrewshire, they specialize in producing high-quality signage for roads, railways, and commercial use. Their mission is to support veterans transitioning to civilian life by offering them meaningful work and development opportunities.

Community Engagement and Support

At Mar Hall, we believe in giving back to our community. This year, with the support of our guests and team, we have raised over £12,000 for Ardgowan Hospice and the My Name’5 Doddie MND charity, contributing to vital local causes.

Through these initiatives and partnerships, Mar Hall is dedicated to fostering community connections and supporting organizations that make a positive impact.
Resort Activities Promoting Sustainability

We encourage guests to explore our estate and its surroundings through sustainable activities:

Bike Hire: Discover the beauty of the countryside on two wheels with our bike hire service. Whether you're looking for a leisurely ride through the estate or a more adventurous journey along nearby trails, our bikes offer an eco-friendly way to explore. Speak to our concierge to arrange your bike hire during your stay.

Guided Walks: Join our guided walks to learn about the local flora, fauna, and history of the estate, promoting an appreciation for nature and conservation.

Golf Course Enhancements

As part of a multi-million-pound renovation, Mar Hall has appointed a new Head Greenkeeper and Head of Golf to oversee its championship 18-hole golf course. Significant investments include repairing all bunkers with total sand replacement, aerating greens with continuous top-dressing throughout the year, and implementing a new automated irrigation system. Additionally, a new fertilisation and disease control process has been established to protect the grounds, and 12 new golf buggies have been purchased to ensure a five-star guest experience.
Future Sustainable Initiatives

In the coming months, we plan to further our sustainability efforts with the following projects:

Energy-Efficient Lighting: Implementing building and garden illumination designs that utilise energy-efficient technologies to reduce our carbon footprint.

Kitchen Garden and Orchard: Creating a kitchen garden with a fruit orchard, vegetable and herb plots, and a topiary garden, along with keeping chickens, to supply fresh, organic produce for our dining venues.

Recreational Spaces: Establishing pétanque courts and a croquet lawn to offer guests sustainable outdoor leisure activities.

Completion of Garden Reading Room: Finalising the interior décor of our garden reading room to enhance guest comfort and experience.

"By integrating these sustainable practices and offerings, Mar Hall is committed to preserving our rich heritage while embracing a future of environmental responsibility. We invite our guests to join us in this journey towards a more sustainable and luxurious experience."
